2-year educationEnglish

Are you interested in technological innovation and development? During the Master's programme in Chemistry, you work with new materials, new separation methods, and synthesis of new materials. These methods are used in medical engineering, in the building industry, and in the food industry.

Academic content

Studying Chemistry you have the opportunity to resolve practical problems related to chemical engineering, develop new materials and new processes, and innovate, design and optimise production processes of chemicals and materials.

You can work with topics such as:

  • Inorganic materials
  • Controlled release
  • Functional polymers
  • Separation processes

Inorganic materials

Studies of structure and properties of inorganic materials. Emphasis is placed on glassy or amorphous materials. The relationships between structure, dynamics and properties of glasses and liquids are studied by using the knowledge of materials chemistry and physics. The development of both new structural and functional materials and nanomaterials is another essential part.

Controlled release

Study and development of the group of molecules called cyclodextrins and their inclusion complexes. The interest in cyclodextrin applications includes development of novel drug delivery systems and pesticide formulations, which are more environmentally friendly than those used today.

Functional polymers

The molecular design of target macromolecules, synthesis and the separation, purification and characterisation of the polymers. The principles of polymerisation dynamics and kinetics are other important aspects.

Separation processes

The physical chemistry of processes in water and wastewater treatment with special emphasis on membrane technology and its application in developing sustainable solutions.

This is a full-time study programme, which is characterised by?problem based project work?in groups. You will be working closely with other students most of the time, and you are required to be present at the university on a daily basis and spend a vast majority of your day there.

In your semester projects, you and your project group study complex chemical issues, that challenge you to use all of your collected knowledge to come up with possible solutions. You are encouraged to occasionally collaborate with external organisations and businesses in your projects to get an idea of the work processes and current issues in the industry. This will prepare you for your own work life after you graduate.

Career opportunities

The Master’s programme entitles you?to the designation Master of Science (MSc) in Engineering (Chemistry).

As a graduate from the Master's programme in Chemistry, you will have access to an exciting professional career. You can find employment in the chemical and pharmaceutical industry, in the public sector, or in an engineering company.

Your future work assignments can involve for instance development of new materials, offshore processes, chemical processes development and improvement, or teaching.

The Master's programme in Chemistry offers courses, experimental laboratory work, and project oriented group work. You will gain thorough knowledge of the fundamental aspects of chemistry while also exploring contemporary issues, modern research and technology.

Work with for example:

  • Materials chemistry
  • Processing of materials
  • Polymer chemistry
  • Supramolecular chemistry
  • Macromolecules
  • Carbohydrate chemistry

In the first two semesters, you split your time equally between three 5 ECTS courses and one 15 ECTS project. The courses will provide you with the basic knowledge, and the projects will allow you to immerse yourself into topics that interest you most.

The study programmes at AAU are based on problem based learning and project work. This gives you a unique opportunity to acquire new knowledge and competences at a high academic level in an independent manner. You get to apply theory to practice in your semester projects, which will prepare you better for your future career.
