Smart Grid Communication – creating sustainable and intelligent power distribution

Smart Grid Communication uses new technologies to solve global challenges and plays an important role in creating renewable energy. Researchers from Department of Electronic Systems contributes to the design of sustainable energy systems that are widely available, striving to find ways to use new technologies, such as 5G for Smart Grid Communication, to interconnect renewable energy sources.

The introduction of renewable energy generation and consumption, such as wind turbines, PV-panels and electric vehicles in the power grid, fundamentally changes the operation conditions of the grid. Instead of power flowing from power plants to the consumers in a deterministic manner, the distributed generation and consumption is much more unpredictable and verifying in nature and requires a much higher level of real-time coordination to ensure that the power distribution grid operates within the limits of its capability.

New communication technologies, such as 5G, can be a bedrock for ensuring stable and sustainable operation of the power grid as the use of renewable energy becomes more and more widespread.
