Using problem-based learning to ensure sustainable societies

The need for integrating sustainability into higher education is greater than ever, and in order for this to happen, change in higher education needs to take place. Research, education and training are important elements in changing higher education, and this is what the Aalborg Centre for Problem Based Learning in Engineering, Science and Sustainability under the auspices of UNESCO has taken the leadership of facilitating and coordinating.

The centre runs a global network of institutions and practitioners working with integration of the sustainable development goals into higher education. Furthermore, we work to ensure that engineering and science graduates from around the world are empowered to contribute to more democratic and sustainable societies by means of problem-based learning (PBL). PBL has proven to be a viable way of integrating sustainability into higher education, as students get the opportunity to work on real life problems and challenges. Climate change as well as other sustainability challenges are growing issues, and future engineers and scientists need competences to handle these problems in order to create more sustainable societies. Therefore, the centre has developed projects and activities to facilitate the relationship between the sustainable development goals and the engineering and science disciplines.
